Race
About a month ago, a group of us took to Banff to participate in the 2007 Winterstart 5-miler. You may recall that I've participated in the last few years, with mixed results.
So Paul, Louis, Jacquie, Helen, Helen's parents, Helen's brother David, David's girlfriend Nicole, and their two friends John and Amir all made the trip. It was nice to be out there. There was no snow on the ground when we got there, so we went on a few nice walks.

After last year's race, I resolved to run the race in under 40 minutes, a 3:38 improvement from that year's results. I trained a lot more than I had ever done before, but not as much as I thought I should have done. The race has a path that is roughly 2km flat, 2 km uphill, 2km downhill, and the last 2km flat. I started the race with Jacquie, Louis and Paul. We all stuck together until the halfway point, when Jacquie tailed off and I, believing that I had tailed off, sped up.
It wasn't until about 1.5km down the hill that Paul and Louis blew by me, and I picked it up again to keep with them. When we hit the last flat portion, Paul somehow kept his insane downhill pace. I managed to keep up with him until about the last 500 meters, when I dropped my fucking toque. It took me about a minute to realize what I had dropped, go back and use the shitty glo-stick light to find it in the dark. I did my best to make up lost time, but ended up finishing in 41:41 , about a two-minute improvement. Paul finished at about 41:08, so even if I'd kept with him, I'd still be a good minute shy of my goal.
